Because Halloween Is Just Around The Corner...

What better way to celebrate the Halloween festivities than shooting up bloody brains? Yum yum. The "brain" part is actually Bailey's Irish Cream (hmmm, Baileys...) that has curdled up because of lime juice.

Make your own bloody brain shooters! Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

1 1/4 oz. strawberry vodka such as Stoli
1/8 oz. Rose’s lime juice
3/4 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
Splash of grenadine

Preparation:

Chill vodka for better smoothness. Add vodka and lime juice to a shaker, shake and strain into a shot glass. Using a straw, dip some Bailey’s Irish Cream into the shot. Once you submerge the straw into the Bailey’s put your finger on top of the straw to hold the Bailey’s in the straw. Dip the straw tip into the vodka and slowly release your top finger. The Bailey’s will curdle a little bit due to the lime juice and you should be able to make strands of Bailey’s.

Repeat the straw/Bailey’s process to build a “brain” in the shot glass. Add a splash of grenadine to the concoction to add the ‘blood’ to the mix. Down the hatch as a shot.

Online magazine SLATE has compiled a list of megachurches (and when I say megachurches, I do mean houses of God that could house tens of thousands of people at a time) and put it in a nifty slideshow complete with information about the infrastructures.

Why anyone would want to hack on Twitter and Facebook (other than cripple its capabilites to generate huge revenues from its services) is really beyond my understanding. Unless of course these hackers really want to get close with Britney Spears or aplusk Ashton Kutcher.

BBC News reports that:

The strike was aimed at a pro-Georgian blogger known as Cyxymu. The attack caused a blackout of Twitter for around two hours, while Facebook said its service had been "degraded".
Google said it had defended its sites and was now working with the other companies to investigate the attack.

[The] attack appears to be directed at an individual who has a presence on a number of sites, rather than the sites themselves," a Facebook spokesman told BBC News.

I am undeniably drawn closer to silhouette photos whenever I look at them, and there's this feeling of wanting to know more about how the image was taken, just like in the photo below:

Penguin Hazard

I can't believe that something as cute and seemingly innocent as that penguin toy can actually be hazardous (to kids). In 2008 this toy has been recalled by the US Consumer Safety Product Commission (wow that's a mouthful) for being a potential laceration hazard.

How anyone can get lacerated by this toy is beyond my comprehension, but then I have to hand it to the perkyness of kids these days, that almost everything on their path becomes dangerous.

Cute penguin, why'd you have to be deadly? Haha.

Tron Legacy is the sequel to the 1982 film Tron (which, if you check online, actually has a lot of loyal following...consider it a cult movie!) I wasn't even born yet when the film was made. And it's taken quite long to make a part II but what the heck--I'm an 80s kid and I'll be one of the excited people to watch out for this movie!

Smile Though Your Day Is Crumbling...

Admittedly, it's not really easy to flash a smile when you're in the middle of a chaos, like working inside a train station. But for people in Japan, not smiling is almost a crime! And because of that (coupled with classic Japanese ingenuity), they created the Smile Scanner. I am betting it has the same principle/technology behind the Smile Shutter function of the newer Sony Ericsson mobile phones and Sony Cyber-shot digital cameras, wherein it actually looks for your smile. Only then will you be able to click.

So why is smiling a prerequisite in the Japanese train system?

The Freakonomics section of New York Times Online tells readers:

Japan’s Keihin Express Railway Co. has set up “smile scanners” at 15 of its stations, where railway employees have their smiles assessed by software in the hopes of perfecting a customer-friendly look.

However, BBC reports that it's not really a compulsory thing:

Some of the busiest train stations in the world have installed computerised 'smile scanners' to help employees deliver a better service.'

Well, forcing people to smile is really something. But if it's for the sake of achieving satisfactory customer feedback, then let's all hold a peace sign, smile, and say "kawaii!!!"

An iPhone Lost Is A Life Lost...

This is just sad.

I can understand the strict security measures with new product releases. But I don't think it has to end this way:

SHENZHEN, China — When a closely guarded prototype of a new Apple iPhone went missing at a huge factory here two weeks ago, an internal investigation focused on a shy, 25-year-old employee named Sun Danyong.

Mr. Sun, a college graduate working in the logistics department, denied stealing the iPhone. But he later complained to friends that he had been beaten and humiliated by the factory’s security team. On the night he was questioned, he sent an anguished text message to his girlfriend.

“Dear, I’m sorry. Go back home tomorrow,” he wrote, according to a message she later posted online. “I ran into some problems. Don’t tell my family. Don’t contact me. I’m begging you for the first time. Please do it! I’m sorry.”

Soon after, in the early-morning hours of July 16, Mr. Sun apparently jumped to his death from the 12th floor of an apartment building in what his employer, Foxconn Technology, says was a suicide.

Apple and Foxconn, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of consumer electronics and a major Apple supplier, issued statements last week expressing sorrow for the death. Foxconn said it suspended one security officer, pending a police investigation, and that the company was now considering counseling services for its employees.

The Paper Castle

The picture definitely looks like an aerial shot of a grand, uber-lighted castle somewhere in Europe. But it's a castle made of paper--hand made craft that took four years to complete! That's like graduating in high school! But I must say, I am amazed at the outcome of this project.

Anna Schwamborn, a design student, has created a range of jewelry containing post-mortem memorial pieces which include hair and cremated ashes taken from a corpse. (See sample below)

According to Schwamborn herself:

The objects are supposed to be worn close to the body of the mourner symbolizing a lasting physical connection between two individuals even after death. This collection is supposed to remind the wearer on the fragility and appreciation of life and most importantly, acting as a keepsake.

Webcams for Music Video

Here's a very interesting music video from Sour. Sour is a Japanese post-rock band formed in spring 2002 by hoshijima (gut guitar/voice), Sohey (eub/bass), KENNNNN (drums/toys). The video for their single 'Hibi no Neiro' (Tone of everyday) from their first mini album 'Water Flavor EP' was made with the help of their own fans. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base, of which many are from outside of Japan. Dig this: each person and scene was filmed purely via webcam.

For this anonymous guy, the other use for his personal computer or PC (that's running on Windows XP, if I may add), is to fry an egg, sunny-side up!

If you don't believe me, check out his step-by-step instructions with images by clicking here. Apparently it took him 11 minutes to wrap up the cooking. It's a no-brainer, actually, given how most hardware units fire up after three or four hours of running major applications, but I still don't think it's something I'd promote, so careful careful, guys.

The things that we capture and upload...who knew that one of them will help bring justice to a person who was stripped of human rights in a rally in 2008?

The news from New York Daily News states:

"Victim in one of most popular YouTube "gotcha's" of 2008 sues NYPD for $1.5 million

The biker who was shoved by an NYPD officer during a "critical mass" rally last year, only to find a video of the incident uploaded to YouTube by a bystander, is now suing the NYPD for $1.5 million. Though the officer originally claimed that the biker had provoked the altercation during the rally, the video - which racked up over 2 million views - demonstrates otherwise."

The victim's lawyer was quoted as saying that "nobody would have cried foul if it wasn't for that video."

Here's the controversial video, which got 2 million views. 2 million views just can't be wrong, you know.

Minus The Crash-Bang-Pow!

I couldn't believe it either, but a flash game could actually work without the crash-bang-pow killer synth sounds! If you play Music Catch, the first impression would be it's another one of those Carpal Tunnel Syndrome-inducing games, but it's not. It's so relaxing, you won't even mind if you don't score high points. It's like enjoying a kaleidoscope of different colours and shapes. The music and graphics are just fantastic and they kind of lull you to the point where you just stare blankly at the screen, enjoying the pink, blue, green and yellow objects that float. Definitely not the game to play in the middle of work, but definitely a good source of relaxation after a day's shenanigans.

You actually unlock songs and other options with a high score so yeah, I think it's also a plus to score high on this game :-)

I've embedded the game here on this blogpost but since the game is too big for my page layout, you can only see half of the screen. But at least you get the whole idea why it's nice. Better to just play Music Catch by clicking here!

Let Them Get Sober First

We've all had our share of nasty stories inside bar washrooms where we've almost regurgitated our insides out, or we've almost passed out because we have practically drowned our blood in too much alcohol. I guess it's fun when you look back on those times, but maybe not so much fun for people who have had to deal with disabilities, or death in the family, just because some people have insisted on taking over behind the wheels even though they're dead drunk.

The image below shows a washroom with stickers of passed out individuals with messages on their shirts. I think I've seen this before and vaguely remember it as part of a campaign to prevent drunk driving. And I think it's a good way to always remind people to let their drunk friends sober up first before they go behind the steering wheel. Or better yet, just take over the car. Because as you know, when you're drunk and you're driving, it feels like everything is a one way street with green lights.

I came across this quotable quote while aimlessly hopping from one link to another:

I have no idea if these words came from Joe Heerdink of his I Am Broke website, but it does make a point. His website, which was born out of a random joke, doesn't have much to offer, but it is a nice easter egg in the interweb. (And you all thought it was about how-to-make-your-first-million-stash)

So how did I end up in Heerdink's site? I couldn't trace it back, but I feel like it had something to do with me looking up about the word "broke".

Today two entertainment icons have passed away, leaving grieving fans behind. Michael Jackson died at the age of 50 after suffering from a cardiac arrest, and Farah Fawcett succumbed to her battle against cancer. She was 62. And so I pay homage to these two wonderful artists that have graced the music and film industry in their lifetime.

Charlie's Angel Farah Fawcett and King of Pop Michael Jackson, you will both be missed.

Wiierd Stuff

No, I didn't misspell that :)

Yahoo Games featured an article about what could probably be the most dangerous Wii accessory to date: CTA Digital's Bowling Ball Controller. CTA Digital claims that this is the first ever Wii accessory to be "fashioned" after a real bowling ball (weight and all). That should sound scary, if in case of a freak accident, this Bowling Ball Controller suddenly slips out of a player's hand and flies right into somebody's precious Ming vase. Or worse, somebody's head.

But that's just looking at the worst case scenario. CTA Digital has fitted the thing with a wrist strap to secure it in the player's hand, even though their disclaimer is all but encouraging.

And you think this Bowling Ball Controller is weird? Wait till you see the list of other weird Wii stuff from Yahoo Games, like this Riiflex that's supposed to be a dumbell replica. Why not just hit the gym? Read the rest of the article by clicking here.

Ellie's Science Experiment

I have no idea if the blogger is a grade school kid or a university champ. What matters to me, really, is that Ellie's blog is of great environmental cause and it's got me hooked, although if this was drug addiction, then my consumption would've been in tiny amounts because the updates are not really on a daily basis. Then again, it doesn't matter.

Ellie's blog, simply titled "My Science Experiment" chronicles the progress of his/her how-to-reduce-electricity project, something worth doing for each and everyone on this planet, thereby cutting on carbon emission in the process.

But I digress.

Ellie's posts exude that feeling of hope that if every one of us would commit to saving electricity by turning AND unplugging idle appliances/computers, then the world will be a much better place again. Why not join in this effort, ayt? And it's not called a Science experiment for nothing--all results have been gauged by gadgets and whathaveyous, like the OWL Wireless Electricity Monitor, so we'd know that those are not just random numbers.

Blogger Turns 10 and...

...it's asking every Blogger babe and dude: "what's your story?"

Well here's mine.

Before I started The Site Aggregator, I have always been the quiet online observer. I just click and browse from one blogspot to another, often noting the things that have sparked major interest on me. It was just later on in my blog-stalking days that it hit me--why not write about the things that I have been bumping in to on the interweb all this time? And so I have created The Site Aggregator.

TSA is still at its infancy. I must admit, sometimes I just down own up to that header of mine that says "Online 25/8". I don't use feeds. I really do click and click and read and read, because I believe the best stuff in the internet are landed on "by chance". But sometimes, it's just impossible to keep the great things coming, as I am always sidetracked by other things, such as my morning job as an advertising/media practitioner, my afternoon gig as a web developer, and my moonlighting work as a photographer and writer. Not to mention the many hours that I spent going back to what I've always liked doing--just reading other people's blogs. Whew. Quite the superhero that I am. But this is where it gets mushy for Blogger--I have to give credit where credit is due. They have made blogging so easy and quick for everyone that there's virtually no room for creative/artistic fatigue when posting an entry. (I should know what this means because I've tried a lot of free blog publishers out there, and by far Blogger rakes in 4.5 stars for me). It's that easy, it's that simple. And well, reading well-maintained blogs that have been around since 2000, I'm more convinced that I'm on the right site.

And if you're asking why a quasi-web dev like me isn't setting up my own webpage...well actually, I have been juggling three sites. But I just keep coming back to Blogger because, like everyone else, I just wanna blog. :)

Cubicle Meltdown

I seriously understand why people are breaking down in the middle of working inside an office cubicle: cramped space, not so much stimulation, deadlines, annoying office workers, the migraine-inducing ring of office phones, etc etc. The list is endless, the stress is all but wearing down. And to top it all off, you got CCTV cameras to film your every ballistic thrashing, as in the case of the poor guy in the video who was spewed with printer ink:

Dying Girl Gets Last Wish

This is a real tear-jerker: Yahoo Buzz has monitored search results generated by people who were looking for news or info about a certain California girl named Colby Curtin (photo below) who was dying of cancer and had one little final wish--to see Pixar/Disney's new animated movie "Up". Pixar has been notified of the girl's conditions and her final request. But because "Up" wasn't slated yet to be shown in cinemas, Pixar sent in a representative to give a DVD copy of the movie so the girl can watch it inside her room where she has been confined. Reports later say that the little girl passed away a few hours after watching the movie.

*Sniff, sniff*

At least her last wish came true. My sincerest condolences to the Curtin family.

I know, the photo is just hilarious. But it does drive a point--you need good images for any presentation, images that encompass your topics or bullet points. Case in point, the Elvis Presley impersonator that you're currently seeing. Yes, imitation (or blatant "copying", if you will) is a big no-no in doing presentations. You don't want your clients to see you in a really bad light when you flash the next slide and they see a picture with a Corbis or iStock watermark. Most clients will fire at that--it just means you don't even have the budget to buy dollar images.

But fret not, people. Presentationzen has a neat roundup of websites where you can acquire (read: BUY) images at low prices, depending on the resolution needed. Some of the sites mentioned are:

(1) iStockphoto.com

One dollar for low-rez images and two-three dollars for higher-rez images.

(2) Dreams Time

About one dollar for high-rez images for members.

(3) Shutterstock

750 royalty-free downloads per month for $139 (US) subscription.

However, if budget's really low and you can't buy stock images, you can opt for the free ones. There's also a roundup of websites that offer free-but-not-so-bad images. Some of the sites mentioned are:

Providing "...free image reference material for use in all creative pursuits.

(2) Flickr's Creative Commons pool

Search the myriad photos people are sharing on flickr by the type of CC license.

Digital Footprints Turned Snail Mail For Grannies

Here's a bright idea: converting your emails/updates/what-have-yous into hard copies so that your octogenarian relatives may fully understand all those LOLs and ROFLs in a way that's comfortable and "closer to home".

It may be a bright idea alright, except that if we have to think "environmentally" along these lines, it would seem like the idea would generate a higher rate of carbon emission--getting electricity to power your laptops/desktop units to printing the emails on fresh paper, the paper having gone through a process that required machineries to run on electricity, gas, mailing the letters requiring fuel-powered vehicles...the list would probably go on and on. I think that's the major downside to this otherwise nice idea. Then again, Grandpa and Grandma may not be that internet savvy, which means getting to log on to Gmail to check their emails would be a big hassle for them. Therefore, receiving the printed emails may actually be beneficial for them.

Oh well. I guess it's gonna take some time to fully bridge the technological gap between the generation abc and the generation xyz. Until that happens, Sunnygram will continue to offer their services to help the elderly people get in touch with the younger ones:

Ultimate Gundam Replica

I may not know the whole deal about Gundam, but I do collect the toys. However they all fall short of expectations against this gigantic Gundam replica that Japan has just completed. Geekologie has some info to share:

"To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the mecha anime/manga/toy/video game franchise, this 18-meter-tall (59-foot-tall) RX-78 has been erected.

Fifty points on the Gundam statue will emit light, and mist will shoot out of 14 different points on the statue. The 1/1 scale Gundam boasts a moveable head and a continuous stream of oh-man-this-is-so-damn-cool."

Wow...just like how we used to see it on TV--Gundam standing as tall as the city's buildings, zapping in on bad bad nemesis. :) Too bad if you're a die hard Gundam fan, you just can't take the statue home to add to your collection. :D

Oh yes you read that right!

You're looking at what could be the biggest Kentucky Fried Chicken logo EVER in this planet. Hmmm...so when you're bored and just messing up with your Google Earth application, you might as well hunt for this logo. Similar to playing the Where's Waldo game--only this time you have to look for Colonel Sander's smiling face.

Valley Photos

So a photographer takes only scenic shots of a place. That's fine, that's normal. But when a photographer suddenly sees a place in a different light and starts churning photographs that depict life that's anything but ordinary, then you got art--which is exactly what blogger and photographer Vanda Nagy (if that's her real name) has done which has transpired from her move to L.A.

In her own words, Vanda describes the neighborhood that has been captured by her camera:

"The neighborhood is going through changes. The over inflated real estate market and the new subway line stretching from the Valley to Downtown have started making this generally uncool area of the Valley more attractive. And thus gentrification has started creeping over the hills. It's a mixed bag. Ratty old commercial buildings get bulldozed off, but in the process the mom-and-pop shops, some of which have been there for decades, get forced out of business. Neighborhood stable, Bob the printer finally gave up the fight with cheap home printers and increasing rents, and closed shop for good. Iliad Books, the best bookstore in the Valley fortunately stayed open, but was forced to move."

Light Painting

This is what photography is all about, that is, using light to your advantage. :D

As it seems, not everyone knows how to tinker with the dials and buttons on most digital cameras, so most shots are fired with the usual setting-- Auto + Direct flash. And if you haven't noticed it before, this is the usual setting they use when they take a photo of you for your driver's license, or worse, when police take a mug shot of you. Not exactly the best combination when taking outdoor shots at night. That's where the slow shutter setting comes handy. You just mount the camera on a tripod, fire away and let the light "paint" the picture for you (for about 5 to 10 seconds).

Or, you can get crazy with "light"--flashlights, LED lights, blinkers, the works!--and craft up a creative night shot, just like what these guys did:

The Other Side of Wonder Woman

This is just interesting--I came across a rather unique visual representation of Diana Prince, otherwise known as the uber-mighty lady Wonder Woman at Hereville.com.

According to its creator and site author Barry Deutsch, "the piece itself is pretty large — 12″ by 16″, on a 13″ x 19″ piece of paper. Elements of Wonder Woman’s costume and possessions, as well as lyrics from the TV show title music, are tattooed on the figure."

I must admit, this is very different from the usual Wonder Woman illustrations I see--Diana Prince in a stunning, metallic, red-blue-gold ensemble with hair so fabulous you'd wonder why she even cares to thwart the bad guys. Then again, that's Diana Prince's calling. :)

This was auctioned last year for the benefit of two shelters for abused women, Raphael House of Portland and Bradley-Angle House, and also to thePortland Womens Crisis Line.

I believe these people are feelin' million-dollars right now. They should be, having missed their flight schedules with the ill-fated Air France Flight 447.

Yahoo News lets us in on the details:

"A reservation mix-up, an overbooking and a Brazilian cabbie's passion for soccer are all that saved some would-be passengers on Air France flight 447 from the fate of 228 others who lost their lives in the mid-Atlantic.

The survivors say their relief is overshadowed by the immense sense of loss they feel for those who didn't make it.

"It feels miraculous and sad at the same time," said Amina Benouargha-Jaffiol, who tried to get on the flight Sunday night, even enlisting a diplomat friend to try to pressure Air France to let her and her husband on.

"Of course, at some level we feel lucky, but we also feel an enormous sadness for all those who perished," she said.

For some it was a simple matter of arriving at Rio's airport late..."

Erasing Jon Arbuckle

This is sweet--I posted a blog entry about the popular web comics created by artist Dan Walsh titled "Garfield Minus Garfield", where Dan erases Garfield out of the comic strips to reveal the real mental nature of the cat's master, Jon Arbuckle. Well, thanks to this anonymous person who came across my page, he gave me a link to another Garfield-inspired webcomic series where this time, Jon Arbuckle is erased out of the comic strips. As the blog author puts it:

"In 1989, Jim Davis drew the following series of six Garfield comics in which the fat, orange cat must grapple with his greatest fear: being alone. With the popularity of Garfield Minus Garfield and the fantastic nature of Photoshop, it now seems possible for Garfield to live his fears. So with that in mind, be prepared to view a world were Garfield must tackle his greatest fears, where there is no Jon Arbuckle, Odie, or Nermel. Where Garfield's only friends are the mice and spiders which still inhabit his house. Welcome to Garfield Minus Arbuckle."

So it doesn't always have to be Garfield! :)

What Has Happened To Magenta?

It's been almost three years since T-Mobile took "ownership" of the colour Magenta--one of the CMYK colours that help printers, graphic artists and web developers alike in their field of work. It's actually more of getting that specific shade of Magenta. But it has sparked a lot of blog posts, links, comments, that it paved a way for online revolt!

I wonder what has happened? Any other colour pitched so far?

Anyways, the Freemagenta website is still up and about and still getting laughs. :)

What do you get when the witty orange feline friend of Jon Arbuckle disappears from their side of the world?

You got hilarity of course!

Artist Dan Walsh created the amusing website Garfield Minus Garfield where he deliberately erases garfield off the comic strips, giving it a whole new spin. As Dan puts it:

"Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb. "

Greek Photographer Arrested in London

Photographers are in abundance right now because DSLRs have suddenly become cheap like mobile phones. Photographers are also running into different troubles because of this hobby, as evident in this news I came across with over the web:

The Greek photographer Pericles Antoniou from Athens Greece, was arrested in London England during the Greek Orthodox Easter for taking photographs of a girl in the London Metro.
Mr. Antoniou, who has a 25-year experience in artistic photography, was sent to jail, shoeless and was not allowed to communicate with any of his family; he is expected on a hearing soon this month.
Mr. Antoniou is also a member of Greek Caravan of Solidarity, which was featured in http://www.tvxs.gr

As he claims in his letter to the Greek Ambassador in England, he was visiting London England due to the Greek Easter seasons, and as a “tourist” he took his camera and rushed to the streets of the British capital city seeking themes to shoot. While on the subway, the mother of a child complained about the fact that he was taking photos of her underage daughter. Mr. Antoniou apologised to the mother and erased all photos which depicted her daughter. However, the father of the youngster was not satisfied with this, and on the next train station asked for the help of police officers, who arrested the Greek visitor.

A Thousand Cranes, 2.0

By now, you all probably know the story behind the 1000 cranes:

"An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy beasts (others include the dragon and tortoise), and is said to live for a thousand years. In Asia, it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. This makes them popular gifts for special friends and family.

The Thousand Origami Cranes has become a symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who contracted leukemia as a result of radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. Her story is told in the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Several temples, including some in Tokyo and Hiroshima, have eternal flames for World Peace. At these temples, school groups or individuals often donate Senbazuru to add to the prayer for peace. The cranes are left exposed to the elements, slowly dissolving and becoming tattered as the wish is released."

So there. A thousand paper cranes, a thousand wishes. It's a nice touch to a very rich culture. But here is a guy who has made a pact with the online world that he's going to create 3 paper cranes everyday, so that by December 31, 2009, Bobby Casumbal would have made a thousand of these little pieces. He puts it in different locations, which makes the project really interesting. The reasons for this endeavor may be hinted on his "links" section:

- Campaign for peace

- Campaign for cancer

Would he be able to make it? Your guess is as good as mine, but I am gonna cheer for this guy. It's a big feat, and he earns my accolade for doing something like this to remind everyone to appreciate each and every day. Good luck, Bobby! :)

Hacking An 8-Ball

Ever wondered what's inside an 8-ball toy? When I was younger I've always been curious about how the 8-ball worked--the usually random yet relevant answers given by this toy has always sparked my interest, and was even heightened when it was featured in the CGI movie "Toy Story".

So what is inside this toy?

I came across a page in the web where a group of (curious) people practically drilled open an 8-ball and showed its contents for the world to see. And yes, that included the dark blue liquid.

According to the people who "hacked" the toy:

"Everyone who's played with an 8-Ball knows that they seem to be filled with a murky, viscous (and presumably harmless) blue fluid. At this stage in the disassembly, the authors believed it might be neccessary to drain the blue fluid before cutting the shell. To that end, drain holes were drilled in the outer shell, and an attempt was made to release the blue fluid. This attempt was unsuccesful; it seems that the blue fluid is contained within some inner reservoir, or, perhaps, a circulatory system."

Henry Lim Photography

I have come across this photography aphorism on the world wide web just one too many times:

"It's the Indian, not the arrow."

In a nutshell, it means one can get amazing shots regardless of the camera gear used because the key to getting good photographs is within the photographer's ability to capture a moment, or tell a story within a frame. Etc, etc. And with that said, I think Henry Lim was able to bring out the essence of that little phrase with his impressive gallery of photographs taken with a Sony Digital Camera. This was between 2002 to 2005 when camera megapixels were merely borderline 4. Here are some samples of his fabulous shots:

Subscription Cards Bracelet

Admit it: most probably, half of the subscription cards inserted inside the magazines you buy end up in your trash bin. The paper, the waste, the loss!

So Timeout New York shares instructions by Alex Lockwood (arguably the best paper folder there is as per article description) on how to recycle those cards instead of just throwing them away--by turning them into colourful bracelets (though the durability of this is yet to be contested). I personally think this isn't limited to just bracelets--think pen holders, paper vases, paper weights. Think green!

The Art of Powerpoint Presentations

I know most of you have had this experience of pulling together a 30-slider Powerpoint deck from all sorts of resources, inserting images, putting in animation transitions, the stuff--and had to present it to a group of 10 people who could care less about your resources, images, and animations because from among the 30 slides, only 4 slides would most likely matter to them.

I think this is the art of Powerpoint presentations.

Blog author Joey De Villa of Globalnerdy.com has pooled together a (creative) summary of how one could present a deck without having to bore the audience to death and actually make them listen to what you have to say. Excerpts from his entry state that:

"Your slides are not cue cards. The purpose of standing in front of an audience is not to read aloud a document written in point form. You’re there not only to communicate an idea, but to engage the people in the room as well; the slides are there as support. That’s why slide presentation software has “presenter mode”, where the slides are displayed on the projector and your notes are displayed on your laptop."
